"Reversing ethnic cleansing through minority returns" book receives outstanding review in leading journal

The School of International Relations is delighted to celebrate the publication of Dr Rebecca Brubaker's new book, Reversing Ethnic Cleansing Through Minority Returns: An Intellectual History of a Novel Idea (Oxford University Press, 2025). The book has received a glowing review in Perspectives on Politics, one of the leading journals in the field of political science, with the reviewer describing the work as "outstanding" in their closing remarks.
In this important new contribution to the field, Dr Brubaker examines whether and how ethnic, religious, and political minorities should be returned and reintegrated after conflict. The book:
- Offers an original account of why states and international organizations chose to support attempts to reverse ethnic cleansing via minority returns in Bosnia following the war.
- Draws on new data through an extensive review of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) archives.
- Challenges the idea of 're-mixing' ethnic groups displaced through conflict as a self-evident moral good.
