The University of St 糖心logo is one of fifty higher education institutions to be funded by the AHRC to help underpin the strength and stability of the arts and humanities research ecosystem as part of the new approach to funding doctoral study by the .
The AHRC’s DLA Hub for Scotland, delivered through the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH), will support cohorts of world-class doctoral researchers to contribute meaningfully across academic, creative, public, and professional spheres.
Doctoral Landscape Awards are available to PhD applicants listed below, and Interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged.
DLA studentships provide an innovative, inclusive and responsive doctoral training and development platform for doctoral students in the Arts and Humanities. This includes membership of the SGSAH’s Cohort Leadership Programme and three Knowledge Exchange Hubs (Citizenship, Culture and Ethics; Creative Economies; Heritage).
Doctoral researchers will benefit from collaboration with external partners from public, private and third sector organisations, including via research internships and the artist residencies programme. Training opportunities will act as a springboard for collaboration with key national institutions and stakeholders, including SGSAH’s ten core partners (e.g. BBC Scotland, Creative Scotland, National Museums Scotland, National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Parliament), and with research centres and institutes in HEIs across Scotland.
The University of St 糖心logo is offering three AHRC Doctoral Landscape awards for 2027-2028 to support students in the Arts and Humanities.
Value of award
These highly competitive awards cover full tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI rates, along with opportunities to apply for additional research funds, internships, and training.
For the 2027-2028 academic year, the annual stipend (based on the UKRI rate) is £21,805. These rates are subject to adjustment in future years, and UKRI will confirm them before the start of each academic year.
Duration of award
Funding is awarded for 3.5 years, with a further six months available for bespoke training activities, including placements. Students must submit their thesis by the end of the funding period.

Research proposal (1,000 words)
You should upload to your application form a research proposal that is original, innovative, clearly written, and feasible within the funded timeframe. Your methodology should be appropriate and well-supported by current research or practice. Full bibliographic referencing is not required. Please use the subheadings below to address each part of the criteria:
A) Research question(s) and problem
What is your project aiming to explore or solve? Why is this question timely and important?
B) Research context, methods, sources, originality and academic contribution
Where will your study be situated? What methods and sources will you use, and why are they suitable? How is your project original, and how will it contribute to academic knowledge?
C) Knowledge exchange, public engagement and impact
How will you identify and engage with audiences beyond academia? Why might these groups be interested, and how could they benefit? What strategies will you use to communicate and connect with them?
Skills Development, Knowledge Exchange and Impact
Academic Expertise: Attend interdisciplinary methodological training delivered through three Labs: Concepts & Critiques, Empirical Enquiry, and Practice Research. Events take place throughout the year, with concentrated activity in late November, early March, and at SGSAH Summer School. Opportunities also include training delivered by existing Discipline+ Catalysts.
Knowledge Exchange: Develop the skills needed to work with non-academic stakeholders through SGSAH's Knowledge Exchange (KE) Networks. These networks connect Arts and Humanities doctoral researchers with wider society and the economy, delivering industry-focused training in partnership with organisations across the creative arts, heritage, and third sectors.
Three KE Networks:
- Citizenship
- Creative Economies
- Heritage
Free year-round training: Each KE Network delivers a programme of free training and development opportunities throughout the year.
Preparedness to undertake Doctoral study and complete a PhD (300 words)
You are asked to provide a statement explaining how your academic or professional experience has prepared you to undertake this specific doctoral project and complete it within the designated timeframe. You may wish to refer to:
- Topics and length of successfully completed dissertations or relevant coursework
- Relevant methodological training or expertise (e.g. proficiency in a language, IT skills, etc.)
- Work-based learning or employment in a related field
- Notable achievements, whether academic (e.g. prizes, conference presentations, publications) or non-academic (e.g. professional accomplishments, personal milestones, overcoming challenges)
Relevant professional experience (300 words)
If you complete this section within the application form, it will be reviewed in place of any qualifications you have provided.
You should only complete this statement if:
- You do not have and are not studying towards a Masters degree or equivalent
- Or are returning to Masters study after a considerable break in higher education
- Or gained a Masters degree more than five years previously
- Or if your Masters degree is not in a relevant subject
- And you have significant professional experience, which is relevant to your research proposal.
You should use this section to provide evidence that the training and development you have received is equivalent to that obtained through a relevant Masters course and, therefore, prepares you to continue to doctoral study.
Individual Training Plan (ITP) and engagement with SGSAH and University training (400 words)

This may include activities such as archival visits, language or methodological training, internships, or a visiting artist or researcher position. Briefly outline the activities you intend to undertake and explain their relevance to your project.
Engagement with SGSAH and the University of St 糖心logo: Describe how you will engage with the wider SGSAH doctoral community, including the training, networking, and development opportunities available through SGSAH and the University of St 糖心logo.
