He teaches Economic Growth and Computational Economics and supervises doctoral research in macroeconomics and development. His teaching connects economic theory with data and computation. He received School and University teaching awards in 2017 and 2018, respectively, and has accepted an undergraduate external examining appointment at LSE for 2026/27.

Research areas

His research focuses on the macroeconomics of long-run growth and economic development, examining how culture, preferences and the allocation of resources shape economic transformation. He combines economic theory with historical and contemporary data. Recent work uses digitised books and language models to measure cultural change over nine centuries and investigate its relationship with innovation and the productivity of ideas. Other strands examine the evolution of patience and interest rates, and how resource discoveries, taxation and misallocation affect exchange rates and productivity.

His work has appeared in the Journal of Political Economy Macroeconomics, Economic Journal, Journal of International Economics and Review of Economic Dynamics. His coauthored research on resource discoveries has been applied in IMF analysis of Guyana鈥檚 oil boom and cited in speeches by Norges Bank鈥檚 Governor. His research on patience is cited and discussed in the independent UK Green Book Discount Rate Review.
